Copy Section Settings to Another Theme by Editing Code

Use this page when you want a section, with the settings you already made, on a different theme (for example the copy Shopify created when you updated your theme) and you want to do it by hand in the code editor.

Two easier routes cover most cases, so check them first:

Manual method (code editor)

A section's settings live in the template file of the page it sits on. You copy that block from the old theme and paste it into the same template on the new theme.

  1. Add the section to the new theme from the app first (My Sections, Add to theme). Without the section file in the new theme, the pasted settings have nothing to render.
  2. Open the old theme's code editor and find the template the section is on, for example templates/index.json for the home page.
  3. Search for ss_ to find the section, then copy its whole settings block.
  4. Open the same template in the new theme's code editor and paste the block inside sections, keeping the JSON valid.
  5. Add the section's id to the template's order list, then save.

The video uses our demo store. The steps are the same on your theme.

If editing code is not comfortable, use Theme Migrator instead, or ask a developer to do this one step.
